The things a child needs to learn are not necessarily taught in school. School is where a child's external faculties are trained and skills acquired to make a living in the world. Real education, on the other hand, is an education of both the heart and the spirit in eternal matters. We are raising children of God, not merely assets to society. When this perspective is realized by both parents and a church community, education becomes a miracle in process. With the life of each child comes grace from God surrounding their development . Those who educate and raise children of God are not limited to their own resources. God is present, and His divine activity within their souls is present. A spiritual orientation to life is the key to true happiness and fulfillment in a child's development. For it is trust that frees the mind, not education. A real education does not just 'teach' but rather 'awakens'. Unfortunately today children are accustomed to externalization and are not guided into an inner life of the spirit.

At Church in the Oaks we seek to change this. Our call is to love children into a life of trust: A trust in God, in their own intuitiveness and in the designs of God for their lives. We believe strongly in the concept of parents as educators and nurturers. Our committed group of children's ministry workers seek to assist parents in the raising of children of God. For it is our belief that parents are not the 'owners' of their children but rather stewards of God's "miracles in process".

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.' (Mark 10:13-16)

Children's ministry is just that: it is a ministry to children. Our goal is to work with God to remove every internal hindrance in a child (e.g.. fear, uncertainty, bitterness, wounded-ness, etc.) to the grace of God which is at work within their spirit. We want children to be aware of the boundless life of God alive within them and succeed in giving a gift to the world of children who remain related to their wholeness and inherent God-given goodness. Ecclesiasties 7:29 says, "This only have I found: God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes." In other words, God has imprinted his own image within each person. It is our own choice of grace-less paths that mar the inherent goodness of our creation. A spiritual path, then, must become one of embracing the work of Christ to 'undo' the effects of sin and restore God's original designs for us in Christ. And, as we teach at Church in the Oaks, love is the agent of undoing our wounds.

May Christ's love become the balm of healing to our generation of children!
